HL vs SL: Which to Choose?

Basic information about HL and SL

In the IB syllabus, there are HL and SL in the subjects. It means higher level and standard level. Students need to choose their study pattern before starting their IB Diploma life, and must choose one subject from each of six Subject Groups as part of the IB Diploma program in addition to the three required core components of the IB: the CAS, Extended Essay, and Theory of Knowledge. Six must be divided into three Higher Level (HL) and three Standard Level categories (SL). It then requires a broad range of work and a variety of expertise, which can only be attained through careful planning and diligent work.

You might be encouraged to look for another school that offers one or more HL courses if they are essential to your goals (degree or job). It is easy to verify the entry subject requirements once you are aware of the degree program you want to pursue, but don’t forget to look into any minimum point requirements, which could be as low as 6 or 7. For example, if you are aiming to study MBBS at HKU in the future, then you should visit the HKU website, and check out their MBBS subject entry requirements. It shows that either Chemistry or Biology should be taken at Higher Level, but taking both is recommended. Therefore, students should do research before making a decision.

Your Strengths and Weaknesses

It could be wise to stick to SL if you are aware that you struggle with the subject you choose. Although challenging, SL courses don’t require as much concentration to absorb the material, and it will be ten times harder to struggle with HL content than a subject you enjoy.

Time and workload

You will devote more time to studying HL subjects because they cover more material than their SL equivalents. Your teacher will likely go more quickly because there is more material to cover; this will make it more difficult for you to catch up if you start to fall behind.
